Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel Pay Tribute to "The Graduate" Director Mike Nichols

Columbia MasterworksPaul Simon and Art Garfunkel are paying tribute to Mike Nichols, the legendary film and stage director, who died Wednesday night at age 83. Nichols directed some of American cinema's classic films, including 1968's The Graduate, for which he won the Academy Award for best director.  Simon & Garfunkel's music, including the hit "Mrs. Robinson," made up the majority of The Graduate's soundtrack.Simon issued a brief statement that reads, "My dear friend of 47 years. I love and admire Mike Nichols."Garfunkel, meanwhile, had a more extensive professional relationship with Nichols, having acted in two films directed by Mike -- 1970's Catch-22 and 1971's Carnal Knowledge. In his heartfelt homage, the singer wrote, "Aahhhh how I loved Mike. Truly. Deeply. He was the most sparkling man among us. Life will be different for us now. Earth will be a little duller. Mike Nichols is not alive."Garfunkel's tribute continues, "The self is a creation. Mike created an extraordinary star -- so bright, so extremely clever -- himself. When you were with him, he brought you up to your best smart self, and kept it light with humor. To act for him on camera was to glide on a liquid film of intelligence.""Before each scene, Mike gave his actors a brilliant and subversive insight," Garfunkel continued. "As you were stirred, he then got you with something really funny. In this state of transcendence, he walked away and said 'roll camera.' Now that he has truly 'walked away' the act of life is, for me, forever charmed."Nichols is one of a select group of entertainers who have won the Academy Award, Emmy Award, Grammy Award and Tony Award, and received numerous other significant honors.  His other directing credits include Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Silkwood, Working Girl, Postcards from the Edge, The Birdcage and Charlie Wilson's War.  Nichols was married to ABC News journalist Diane Sawyer, whom he wed in 1988.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Rod Stewart's New Album Coming in Spring, May Feature Reggae, Ska & Celtic Sound

Credit: Penny LancasterRod Stewart's 2013 album Time was a success, and featured his first new, original songs in years.  Now Rod says he's going to release another new album this spring, but what it's going to sound like may surprise you.Vegas Player magazine reports that Rod's new album will feature a lot of "Celtic melodies" -- perhaps reflecting his Scottish heritage -- and that he's also been experimenting with ska and reggae sounds.  "Believe it or not, I’ve got ten tracks ready for the new album," he tells the magazine. "I’ve got songs coming out of my bum at the moment,” he says with a laugh. “I just wish I could have had this twenty-five or thirty years ago. I was enjoying myself too much then.”Meanwhile, Rod is currently performing in Las Vegas at his residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and he'll be back in January and February for more shows there before he heads to Australia on tour.  Asked how much longer he plans to record and tour, Rod tells the magazine, "As long as the voice is there, I’ll keep going. I’ve been really lucky with my voice. It’s stayed in pretty good shape. It gets a bit of a battering now and then -- four shows in six days -- but I look after it as if it were the crown jewels.""It’s all about being comfortable with what you do, who you are, what you wear, what you say and who you mix with," says the 70-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. "I’m very comfortable in the suit I’m wearing at the moment. When I do feel uncomfortable, I will step aside and there’s no doubt that day will come. Taylor Swift Is First Woman in History to Replace Herself at #1 on "Billboard" H

ABC/Fred LeeIn the 56-year history of the Billboard chart, no female artist has ever replaced themselves at number one...until now.  Does it surprise you to learn that Taylor Swift's the one who's done it?The singer's new single, "Blank Space" jumps from #13 to #1, replacing her previous hit "Shake it Off" at the top of the chart.  "Blank Space" is now Taylor's third #1 hit on the chart overall.  Her new album 1989 has now produced two number one hits.  It's the first album by a woman to do so since Adele's 21.In addition, Taylor's only the 10th artist in the history of the chart to replace themselves at #1.  Among the others: the Beatles, Boyz II Men, Usher and The Black Eyed Peas.As for why "Blank Space" zoomed to #1, the release of the song's funny, buzzy video,  in which Taylor plays a woman who goes insane from jealousy, definitely had something to do with it, since streaming now counts towards chart position.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Celine Dion's Vegas Return Delayed; Mystery Artists Taking Over Extra Dates at C

"People's" Sexiest Man Alive Issue Features Levine, Buble, Timberlake, Legend, P

Art Streiber/NBCAs of today, Adam Levine is no longer People's Sexiest Man Alive: Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, best known for playing Thor in the Marvel series of superhero films, including The Avengers, has claimed the honor for 2014.  So how is Adam taking the news that he no longer holds that title?"Very well," laughs People staff editor Antoinette Coulton. "Y'know, it's a year officially, but people talk about this even after the year is up.  So I'm sure he wishes Chris well. He's in the issue as well, as our outgoing guy, and he's having fun with it."Adam doesn't have much to complain about: in the year since he took the title, he won The Voice again, appeared in a movie, topped the charts with Maroon 5, and got married.  In the new Sexiest Man Alive issue, on stands Friday, he's featured in a segment called "Facing Their Fears," where hot stars are asked what scares them the most.  Adam says, "Death. Because I love my life."John Legend is also featured in the segment, and Coulton says John reveals his greatest fear is a recurring dream he has where "he's in college and he never gets to class on time and he never earns his degree -- even though he does have his degree."A feature called Sexy at Every Age features One Direction's Harry Styles among sexy men in their twenties, Justin Timberlake and Michael Buble among sexy men in their thirties, and Prince and Lenny Kravitz among sexy men in their fifties."Anyone who saw his latest performance on SNL, would think that Prince, through the decades?  He's a mainstay," Coulton says of putting the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer on the list.  As for JT, Coulton says, "I think he made that transition from boy band member to full-fledged musician and he made it seamlessly. There's no scandal. He looks great and we love him for that."Coulton, meanwhile, thinks that Buble's new status as a married father has made him even more sexy.  "And I think he just has to open his mouth and sing a couple of bars and you want to swoon," she laughs.  A few other musicians featured in the issue: Adam Levine's Voice buddy Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani's rocker husband Gavin Rossdale, Adam Lambert -- in a segment called "From Geeky to Gorgeous" -- and Enrique Iglesias, in a segment highlighting the countries that have produced the sexiest men.You can drool over all these hot guys when People's Sexiest Man Alive issue hits newsstands Friday.Follow --ABCNewsRadio!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

MAGIC! May Not Continue Reggae Sound for Next Album: We "Have No Rules," Says Si

Chapman Baehler/RCA RecordsWhen MAGIC!'s super-catchy hit "Rude" topped the charts this summer, it marked the first time that a reggae tune had hit #1 in the U.S. in more than a decade.  But according to MAGIC! frontman Nasri, the reggae thing was something the band happened upon randomly, and he's not sure if they'll retain that sound for the future."You know, the reggae thing happened like half-way through [the album], where everyone around us, when we would do it, we'd feel good [and] they'd feel good," he tells ABC News Radio. "And I'd be like, "Should I dive in completely to this?  Because if I do, there is no turning back -- and will I enjoy it?'  And we just love it.  It's so relaxing to write, record and play."But Nasri says reggae is just one of the Canadian band's many musical influences.  "We're grown men, man," he points out. "We've listened to music for a long time.  Combined, you know, there's a lot of years of experience, so we'll use whatever we want to use and, hey, next album -- we've already been writing it, and we write all the time -- it's kind of similar, but it's different concepts and different sounds.""The next one could be, I dunno, a country album," he adds. "MAGIC! has no rules."As for why the band even started playing reggae in the first place, Nasri  says the sound came naturally to him and his band mates, who heard a lot of reggae as kids in Canada. "Growing up, you know, in Toronto, we did listen to everything and reggae is a pretty big genre of music in Toronto because we have a big [population of] Caribbean descent there," he explains. "I've always listened to all kinds of music and reggae was just another one that I was dabbling with and this one stuck."Considering it had been so long since a reggae song was a hit, does MAGIC! feel, then, that they've turned a whole new generation on to that sound?  "I don't know, I mean, I guess we'll find out, right?" says Nasri. "We'll see kids starting to listen to old [Bob] Marley records and old Police records and anything that resembles MAGIC! That'd be great."  MAGIC! will be performing at this Sunday night's American Music Awards with Wyclef Jean.  In February, they'll kick off a tour opening for another band influenced by the Police: Maroon 5.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Billy Joel Baffled by This Week's Honors: "I'm Supposed to Be Irrelevant"

Courtesy Library of CongressBilly Joel was honored Monday night in New York City with a big award from the performing rights organization ASCAP, and Wednesday in Washington, D.C., he'll be getting another one from the Library of Congress.  But the Piano Man says he's a bit confused by the sudden outpouring of accolades.  "I'm 65 -- I'm supposed to be irrelevant," he tells USA Today."I'm starting to suspect that I have some kind of terminal disease," he jokes to the paper. "They keep giving me all these awards, and I'm thinking, 'Are you trying to tell me something I don't know?'...I keep trying to have a dignified exit, and getting pulled back in."Billy's claim of being irrelevant isn't borne out by the facts, though: he's been packing fans into New York's Madison Square Garden once a month since January of this year, and there's no end in sight -- he just scheduled his 17th consecutive show there, for May 28.  But the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer keeps putting himself down."I was a lot better when I was younger," he says. "I could hit higher notes, run all over the place."  He adds, "If I think I suck, I'll give it up."But that's unlikely too.  Billy recalls a recent conversation he had with his pal Bruce Springsteen. "We were saying, 'How do we keep doing this?' But it's what we do. We're lucky enough to have this job, the greatest that anybody could have," he reveals. One thing's for sure, though: despite his talent, Billy says if he was an artist coming up now, he'd never make it.  He laughs, "I'd probably have to wear a G-string — and that'd be the end of that."Billy will receive the Library of Congress' Gershwin Prize for Popular Song Wednesday night in Washington.  The event will be taped and air January 2 on PBS, and feature tributes from the likes of Tony Bennett, Kevin Spacey and John Mellencamp.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
